America is diseased.

I’m from earthquake country. We build in the extra strength for those. Especially in new schools. Don’t tornado alley schools have tornado shelters?

Anyone else think this is not the next best thing to keep kids safer for a thousand dollars a kid? LAUSD has about 700,000 students and teachers. For 3/4 billion dollars…

Well, we just went out into the hallway and did the same pose to protect us from a nuclear bomb. That was every bit as crazy as this is, but at least it didn’t cost any money.

We were told to put our heads down as far as we could into our lap as we sat at our desks. We joked we were “kissing our asses goodbye.” “If you see an object fall from a plane get down” was another gem.
Now we have to fear one another because……Just why do we once again?

America is diseased.

It seems some parts are inoperable.

That would be me agreeing with you on this one. A backpack designed to resist gunfire I can understand, since it will protect a child while the child runs away from the shooter (To be clear, such a thing should not be needed, but as a protection concept it does make some sense). But having the child roll a blanket over his/her head makes the child a stationary target and only requires the shooter to get alongside the child and then fire.

I therefore find the “bulletproof blanket” idea to be Worse Than Useless, as it encourages the adoption of tactics that make children more vulnerable to an ‘active shooter’.

Who would have thought that we would gravitate towards school shooting drills rather than address the real problem.

It’s the American Way!

Really does look like a very 50’s retro solution. You are right in my opinion Dark Falcon and Rightwingconspirator. Really way too much to spend on a non solution. And as a resident of tornado alley partly covering up for a tornado doesn’t protect against being crushed by the building falling or wind speeds that can pick up rail road cars and semi-truck trailers.

The school districts didn’t build shelters because getting a direct hit from a tornado was thought of as rarely happening. Hallways were considered sufficiently reinforced to withstand the wind force. As cities sprawl and science catches up with the physical reality of tornadoes the truth of another myth shows itself.
